What Is DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid)? A Fleet Manager's Guide

DEF is 32.5% urea and 67.5% water, and every SCR-equipped diesel engine needs it to stay in compliance and at full power. Here is what it does, how much you will burn, what happens if you run dry, and why South Florida heat shortens shelf life more than you would expect.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is not fuel, and it is not optional. Every diesel engine built since roughly 2010 with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) — nearly all Class 6-8 trucks, most modern diesel pickups, and a growing share of Tier 4 Final generators and construction equipment — requires a separate tank of DEF to stay legally emissions-compliant and, in most cases, to keep running at full power.

What is DEF made of?

DEF is a precise mixture of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionized water — nothing else. It is colorless, non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-hazardous. That 32.5% concentration isn't arbitrary; it's the eutectic point of the urea-water mixture, the concentration at which the solution has the lowest possible freeze point (around 12°F / -11°C) for a urea-water blend. A meaningfully different concentration either freezes at a higher temperature or performs worse in the SCR reaction, so DEF sold anywhere in the country is manufactured to that same 32.5% target within a tight tolerance.

DEF is sold industry-wide under the trademarked name "DEF" and manufactured to the international quality standard ISO 22241, covered in more detail below. It is not interchangeable with radiator coolant, windshield fluid, or any other fluid on a truck despite superficially resembling water — using the wrong fluid in a DEF tank can damage the SCR system.

How DEF and SCR work together to cut NOx

Selective Catalytic Reduction is the aftertreatment technology that lets modern diesel engines meet EPA NOx (nitrogen oxide) limits without a major sacrifice in fuel economy. Here's the mechanism, in plain terms:

  1. DEF is injected in a fine mist into the hot exhaust stream, downstream of the engine and upstream of the SCR catalyst.
  2. Exhaust heat causes the urea in DEF to break down (hydrolyze) into ammonia and carbon dioxide.
  3. The ammonia reacts with NOx inside the SCR catalyst, converting it into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapor — the same two things that already make up most of the atmosphere.
  4. The treated exhaust exits through the tailpipe with NOx reduced by up to 90% compared to the same engine without SCR.

The engine's onboard computer meters DEF injection precisely based on load, exhaust temperature, and NOx sensor feedback — there's no manual adjustment for the operator. All the driver or operator needs to do is keep the DEF tank filled.

One point that confuses a lot of operators moving between regions or reading international spec sheets: DEF and "AdBlue" are the same product. AdBlue is simply the trademarked trade name used in Europe and several other markets for the identical 32.5% urea / 67.5% water solution built to the same ISO 22241 standard. If a generator, imported piece of equipment, or fleet vehicle's manual calls for AdBlue, standard U.S. DEF is the correct fluid — there's no reformulation needed at the border.

How much DEF does a truck or generator actually use?

DEF consumption tracks diesel consumption closely, which makes it easy to plan for. Most heavy-duty diesel engines with SCR consume DEF at roughly 2% to 3% of diesel fuel volume, occasionally running toward 4% under sustained heavy load or aggressive duty cycles. In practical terms:

DEF tanks are sized by the OEM to roughly match a normal service interval, so most trucks and generators need a DEF top-up somewhere between every oil change and every other fuel fill — not every single fueling stop, but frequently enough that it needs to be part of the routine, not an afterthought.

What happens if you run out of DEF

Running a DEF-equipped engine dry is not a minor inconvenience — it's designed by federal regulation to be impossible to ignore. EPA emissions rules require a mandatory "inducement" system on every SCR-equipped engine, and it escalates in stages that are essentially identical across Cummins, Detroit, Volvo, PACCAR, and Caterpillar platforms:

  1. Early warning: a dashboard light and message appear when the DEF tank drops below roughly 10-15%.
  2. Escalating alerts: warnings intensify as the tank approaches empty, often with an audible alarm.
  3. Torque and power derate: once the tank is empty (or DEF quality fails a sensor check), the engine computer cuts available torque, often by 25% or more.
  4. Speed limiter: if DEF still isn't refilled, most systems cap road speed at a low single-digit number of miles per hour — enough to limp to a fueling point, not enough to keep working.

The engine won't shut off entirely and isn't damaged by running out of DEF — but a truck limited to a few miles per hour is functionally out of service until refilled. For a fleet, that's a stranded vehicle, a missed delivery window, or a driver burning hours waiting for a DEF jug. The fix is simple and immediate: DEF poured into the tank clears the fault within a normal drive cycle once the engine re-verifies tank level and quality.

DEF shelf life in Florida heat — why storage matters here

This is the part of DEF management that catches Florida operators specifically, because DEF's stability is temperature-sensitive in a way that most fuels and fluids aren't. Properly stored DEF — kept below roughly 68°F (20°C) — has a shelf life commonly cited in the range of one to two years. Once DEF is exposed to sustained heat above roughly 86°F (30°C), the urea begins breaking down faster than normal (a slow hydrolysis into ammonia and biuret), and usable shelf life can shrink to a matter of months rather than years.

South Florida's ambient temperature sits above that 86°F threshold for a large share of the year, and the surfaces DEF containers actually sit on or near — asphalt yards, uncovered totes, the bed of a truck in direct sun, an unconditioned storage shed — routinely run well hotter than ambient air temperature. A few practical rules that matter more here than in a cooler climate:

ISO 22241 — the quality standard behind every jug

ISO 22241 is the international standard that defines DEF quality: the target urea concentration (32.5% ±0.7%), permissible impurity limits for trace metals like calcium, iron, copper, sodium, and other contaminants that can foul SCR catalysts and injector nozzles, plus density, refractive index, and alkalinity requirements. It exists because DEF impurities — not just wrong concentration — are a leading cause of SCR catalyst fouling and premature dosing-system failure.

For a buyer, the practical takeaway is simple: buy DEF that carries the API Certification mark or explicitly states ISO 22241 compliance, whether it's a retail jug or a bulk delivery contract. Off-brand or unverified DEF sold without certification is exactly the product most likely to be out of spec on concentration or contaminated with trace metals — and SCR system repairs from bad DEF run well into the thousands of dollars.

Pricing scales with volume the same way fuel does: single retail jugs typically run $3 to $4.50 per gallon, pump-dispensed DEF at a truck stop is usually a dollar or more cheaper per gallon, and bulk tote or tank delivery for fleet accounts brings the per-gallon cost down further — often close to half the retail jug price at sufficient volume.
